Gaston Mall

Located just outside Charlotte, this site started as circa 1950 landfill, adjacent to the Old Gaston Mall. We gave it new life.

Project Overview

We were comissioned to build a new retail store on a site that had been an unofficial junkyard for more than 50 years. Prior to construction, we took the time to remove approximately 60,000 tons of debris, including tires, paper, plastic, soda cans, glass, abandoned furniture, and even a motorcycle.

Improvements were also made to the water quality downstream by removing trash, debris and overgrowth. We provided additional structure for stream stabilization. Approximately three acres of wetland were created, and we added more than 80,000 new plantings.

We also constructed an extensive underground storm water detention system to collect rain water on the site. It system runs all the way to nearby Interstate 85 and will use vegetation, such as trees, shrubs, and grasses, to remove pollutants from storm water runoff.
