River Run Village

When complete, we were told River Run should be the poster child for the right way to build on the Cahaba River.

Project Overview

The River Run project, nestled on the banks of the scenic Cahaba River, included several special design features to protect the waterway. Since the Cahaba is a source of drinking water for the Birmingham MSA, seven municipal agencies monitored construction to ensure quality water discharge.

To separate the improvements from the river, we constructed a stone retaining wall by hand. It is 450’ long, 20’ wide at the bottom and narrows to 10’ thick at the top. The wall extends from 18’ below the flood elevation of the river. A bay saver and bio swales were installed to filter contaminates from the parking surfaces before the storm water drains into the river. The project received an Award of Excellence from the Associated Builders and Contractors.
