About 25 or 30 years ago, there were two national construction companies that were positioned for continued success. Over time, leadership either passed away or retired, and those two companies are no longer in business. Seeing them break up was jaw dropping. Both had outstanding individuals doing their thing, but when leadership changed and got disjointed, so did the overall health of the organization. Just like that, they were gone.
One might have the best policies or great this-and-that, but it’s really the team who builds a reputation and sustains it. Simply said, great companies are made up of great people. Our CFO reminds me of this constantly. I may be out in front as the face of this company, but if our organization does not have solid leadership doing quality work, then front end efforts are worthless and wasted.
Hopefully, it’s something we never forget.
