I recently read an article generalizing the types of leaders you often find in a construction setting. It discusses the importance of creating a mix of people who are great at coaching, pacesetting, being autocratic, and working as servant leaders. These are all vital to a company’s success, but the one that really resonates with me right now is the democratic leader.

Democratic leaders focus on the bigger picture, taking everyone’s opinion into consideration before making overarching decisions that impact the company. These folks are usually found in the top tier of management, and the way they handle direction at the highest level can really impact the whole team on a daily basis. It’s a big responsibility. If we shift the type of work we pursue, that changes the projects that come in the door and what our folks work on each day. The same goes for any policy changes, adopting new technology, reporting and so much more.

At the same time, any successful organization need leaders that listen well. After collecting all the facts and opinions, they must have faith in their own decision-making capabilities to guide with a steady hand and a good compass. If all of this is done correctly, then there is better loyalty, creativity and trust within the organization.
