A couple of weeks ago, I was in NOLA visiting my son and his family. We took a long weekend to see some of the sites together and eat a lot of great food. Merrill’s home is across the street from City Park, and I had the opportunity to meet two dynamic women who are bringing fresh food to wide variety of people in New Orleans.
River Queen Greens is an 88-acre vegetable farm located across the river from downtown New Orleans. The Lower Coast Algiers address is only 10 miles from the city, and across the street from the Mississippi River levee, which means the land produces rich, river-fed soil. They advocate for sustainable land ownership, small scale agriculture and employment opportunities for under-represented populations. River Queen Greens offers farm share box subscriptions and also sells weekly at City Park. One of the coolest things they do is offer their food, which is certified naturally grown, the anyone who uses an EBT card to receive SNAP benefits for 50% off.
I’m always impressed with people who have both a big idea and the grit to make it happen. These women are making a real difference locally, respecting the land, and bringing quality food and nutrition to the community.
