I’ve talked a fair amount about mentorship because I feel it’s important. Our people are the heart of our company, and we usually try to partner an assistant project manager with a seasoned PM or senior team member to set the newer hires up for success. This works well for a number of reasons, and we’ve found that it’s not always the older generations passing information to the younger ones. I talked here about how our team tries to maximize knowledge sets and open the lines of communication, so that we can utilize the fresh skills our Gen Z and Millennial team members bring to the table, technology being a prime example. While we are not perfect in this regard, we are taking some steps to improve our system and culture.
It does seem that the dynamics of mentorship are changing a bit. I recently read an article saying some of the traditional one-on-one has given way to a more community-based approach. This is true for us, as we are beginning to explore how we can expose our APMs and others new to the company to several mentors, so they can learn best practices from each person.
