Steve Jobs may not have been the most beloved manager, but there is no doubt he found a way to encourage the best out of the people who worked with him. I think the philosophy is summed up with this 2008 quote from him:
“My job is to not be easy on people. My job is to make them better.”
While I am not sure I agree with the first part of the quote, that final sentence is a powerful lesson for leaders everywhere. In a time where we hear so much negativity about the world around us, we have the opportunity to rise above the expectations and shape the next generation of our leaders. In my experience, this means offering support in the form of mentorship and then framing feedback in a way that encourages personal growth.
