That’s a lofty title, I know. I’m the first to admit that I don’t know everything, but 31 years in business has taught me a thing or two about working and life. A few thoughts worth sharing:
Be productive when the inspiration strikes. I’ve been known to send emails in the middle of the night. I sleep better when I take care of what’s on my mind and I’m also less likely to forget if I take care of things right away.
Wake up early. I get the most done before the sun comes up. It’s like a “twofer” for me–Every hour I work in the morning is like two hours worked later in the day. There are no distractions and my mind is clear. Sending emails early in the morning gets the recipient’s attention more than an email sent during the business day. If your note is to a customer, early replies show you are on top of it.
Surround yourself with quality folks. This goes for friends, colleagues and work associates. It makes life better on both the business and the personal side. For business, there’s nothing like having a quality group around you. Nothing.
Delegate. This goes with the previous point. If you have hired people you trust, let them do what they do best. It will keep you from getting lost in the weeds. This is a lot harder said than done for someone who worries about the customer and experience.
Remember that success isn’t only your work achievements. To me, success means being well-rounded. When you’re at work, work hard. But leave time for family and the leisure activities you enjoy. Take care of your health, and give back to your community. To me, success is measured by the balance in your life, not by your bank balance.
